Game Picks | Reclaim Moria with a Mining Song: The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria Co-op Progression

Explore the officially licensed Tolkien adventure Return to Moria: rekindle Durin's forge, build underground fortresses, defend against Orc hordes, and set up a dedicated server.

“Mine! Drink! Sing battle songs!” If you and your friends love the grand epic of The Lord of the Rings, The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is an underground adventure you should not miss. Play a dwarven expedition returning to its ancestral home beneath the Misty Mountains, break through iron gates sealed for a thousand years, mine mithril to deep, stirring dwarven songs, and hammer hordes of underground Orcs! Here is a practical guide to squad survival underground and persistent-server pitfalls.

The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria dwarven co-op

Why Is Return to Moria So Compelling in Co-op?

  1. An atmospheric dwarven way of life: Who can resist everyone singing old dwarven songs while mining? When tired, sit around the campfire with roast meat and ale for maximum comfort. Then, well fed, hammer away beside Durin's great forge to create gleaming dwarven plate armor and two-handed battle axes!
  2. Mining noise and The Hordes: Mining underground comes at a price. The louder your pick strikes the rock, the more alert the Orc patrols lurking in the dark become. Fill the noise meter and alarms ring through the depths as hundreds or thousands of Orcs and cave trolls surge from every opening! Someone must hold the narrow tunnel entrance with a shield while others fire crossbows from behind.
  3. The Golden Update's Sandbox Mode and underground engineering: The official Golden Update introduces a completely nonlinear, procedurally generated Sandbox Mode, freeing you from the campaign's linear story. Your squad can build ziplines and large minecart lifts in entirely random underground mazes, gradually turning ancient ruins into a magnificent, impregnable dwarven fortress.

Avoiding Pitfalls: Why Host a Dedicated Server?

Mining ore veins, forge queues, and settlement restoration progress over time in Moria. If a player's personal computer hosts the game, everyone is left waiting when that player turns it off. A dedicated server running around the clock lets everyone log in and mine whenever they like:

An Easier Way to Manage Your Squad's Server

We recommend our open-source LanGame Server Manager (LGSM) (GitHub: SZSLGJCOM/LanGame-Server-Manager). Its Return to Moria preset provides one-click download and startup, automatic avoidance of port conflicts, and scheduled complete live snapshots of world saves, protecting against save damage when Orcs and trolls wreck your home.

Playing Across Networks and Joining the Server

  • With a public IP: Forward UDP/TCP port 7777 on your router. Friends can enter public-IP:7777 from the main menu to connect directly to your underground Moria fortress.
  • Without a public IP on rental or campus networks: Open the LINK feature in LanGame OS Orbit together, join a private encrypted room, and connect using the virtual network adapter IP. The encrypted P2P tunnel offers low latency and zero packet loss—light your torch and enter the mine!
